Awesome Anderson Annihilates Academy

Ellon travelled to Duthie Park on Saturday to play relegation threatened Academy.  On losing the toss Ellon were asked to bat.

Andy Churchill and Steve Anderson opened the batting for Ellon against some wayward bowling and they brought up 50 runs in only 7 overs.  Both batsmen however were giving the fielders catching practice with some harder than others.

The partnership was ended when Churchill was bowled by the lively pace of Namibian Cobus Huisaman for 27.

Jon Barrett joined Anderson and the pair set about the Academy bowlers hitting the ball into the duck pond on a couple of occasions!  The pair put on 85 runs in 11 overs helping the total onto 158 off only 26 overs. But then Barrett edged an innocuous delivery from Niruban to the wicket keeper and was out for 42.

Chris Watson came into join Anderson with Anderson reaching yet another 50 for the club.  He brought this up with an excellent drive through the off side.  By this time both batsmen were finding the boundary with regularity and it came as no surprise when the pair brought up the fastest 50 of the innings in only 4 overs together.  Anderson also completed his century while the pair were batting together.  The partnership was ended when Watson was bowled by Borstlap for 28.

Craig White joined Anderson and the pair were given licence to play their shots with only a few overs left before the declaration.  Unfortunately Anderson lofted a catch to Huisamen at mid on but this could not take the gloss off a truly great innings.  Anderson made 125, which is only 11 runs short of the all time Ellon high score set by the late Bruce Fenwick against Turriff.

Skipper Scott Middleton joined White and he played 3 glorious shots off the bowling of Borstlap before misjudging a slower ball.

The Ellon innings closed on 282 for 5 from 40 overs.

Ellon knew they would have to make early inroads into the Academy batting line up.

Steve Reid and Ross Wade opened the bowling for Ellon with Wade making the early breakthrough after only 3 overs when he bowled Huisamen for 1.

Sandy McLaughlin joined Leon Borstlap and it was Borstlap who was looking far more comfortable at the crease as he was smashing the loose delivery out of the park.  At the other end McLaughlin was looking far more nervy against the sheer pace of Reid.  So it came as no surprise when the partnership was broken by Reid when he had McLaughlin trapped on his crease lbw for 21.  The Academy total was 65 for 2.

George was the next batsmen in but he did not hang about long.  A bouncer into his ribs from Reid softened him up then a pull pitched delivery 2 balls later cleaned him up.

Liptrott rode his luck against the bowling of Steve Anderson as he played and missed time after time but he was not so fortunate when he came up against Reid.  He became Reids’ third victim of the afternoon when he was lbw.

With Reid getting tired Jon Barrett was introduced into the bowling attack.  Barrett earned the next wicket when McGee edged the ball to a waiting Scott Middleton at slip.  The Academy innings was just about over with a couple of recognised batsmen to come.  Borstlap was still at the other end and he brought up his 50 with a pull for 4.

Anderson picked up the next wicket of Clark when he hit the ball into the hands of Craig White at mid on.

At last Ellon got Borstlap out, he played one big shot too many and was caught at the 2nd attempt by Chris Watson off the bowling of Jon Barrett for 92.

The Academy innings was almost over so Watson was introduced into the attack.  Barrett picked up another wicket when Matthew was caught by Churchill at mid off then a couple of overs later Watson bowled Niruban.  The combination of Anderson and Barrett picked up the last wicket as the result of a run out with the Academy innings ending on 182.

Ellon batting superbly with everyone supporting the excellent innings of Anderson.  Yet again Steve Reid was chief destroyer with the ball as his pace is too much for most batsmen in the grades!  Ellon are on their travels to Stonehaven next weekend.
