Artisans v Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’

Ellon Gordon ‘Penna’ Cricket Club travelled to Harlaw for the Grade 1 match against Artisans who are fighting to avoid the drop to Grade 2.   Artisans won the toss and chose bat first on a hard flat wicket in gorgeous sunshine.

Without Ried and Wade Ellon lacked penetration and Artisans made hay in the sunshine scoring freely off the Ellon bowling attack.  Forsyth, in particular, was in fine form and produced some excellent scoring shots enabling Artisans to pass 100 in the 18th over.

The opening partnership continued to 167 before Andy Parks had Dickie caught for 53.  Forsyth carried on with his fluent innings ending unbeaten on 157 out of his side’s total of 259 for 3 wickets.  Steve Anderson taking the other two wickets towards the end.

Ellon Gordon Penna’s reply received an early setback losing in form batsman Steve Anderson with only 14 runs on the board.  Jonathan Barrett came in and set about the bowling with enthusiasm until he mis-directed a cut shot and was caught at second attempt for 33 with the score on 73.  Andy Churchill was joined by Chris Watson and they continued to move the score along until Churchill was caught behind for 37.

Chris Watson was producing his best batting performance this season, with a sensible approach & punishing any bad balls.  He and Andy Parks put on a stand of 74 before Parks fell to a fine catch by wicket keeper Dickie.  The score had been pushed on to 191 before Chris Watson was eventually deceived by a ball from Golder and was bowled for and excellent 65 runs.

It left Craig White and Huw Owen to see Ellon safely through for a draw denying Artisans the maximum points they so badly needed.

The batting of young Craig White deserves a special mention.  His 30 not out at the close of the innings was a joy to watch with some lovely straight drives.  He has deservedly been a regular for the first XI this season and will be a great asset for the future.

Next weekend Ellon, sponsored by Penna Consultancy, travel to Cults for the Grade 1 match on Saturday then entertain Banchory in the Turriff Cup at Gordon Park on Sunday.
