Ellon share the spoils with Bon Accord

Ellon entertained last seasons league champions Bon Accord at Gordon Park on Saturday.  On winning the toss Scott Middleton opted to field.

Ellon opened the bowling with Stephen Reid and Steve Anderson.  Both bowlers made life very difficult for the Bon Accord opening batsmen and as a result earned a few chances which never stuck.  Ellon picked up the first wicket when Meres edged a delivery to guly where Anderson took an excellent catch.

New batsman Jake Hannah did not look comfortable and he struggled against Reid, Anderson and change bowler Ross Wade.  At the other end Awan was still accumulating runs at a steady pace and with Bon Accord on 111 from 27 overs he gave Steve Reid an easy catch at point off the bowling of Jon Barrett his innings closed on 61.  Before the game Awan had score 4 consecutive hundreds in the last 4 matches.

Nawaz Mirza joined Hannah but they did not stay together for long as Hannah misjudged a delivery from Wade and Barrett took the catch at cover.

This flury of wickets started a collapse that Bon Accord never really recovered from as Chris Watson was introduced into the attack.  Barrett picked up the next wicket of dangerman Mirza thank to a brilliant reflex catch by Tyson Dunz.

Watson picked up his 1st wicket of the afternoon when he bowled Brown

Not to be out done by the young wicket keeper Middleton took an equally sharp catch at slip again off the bowling of Barrett to dismiss Malik.

The innings was finished after another couple of overs with Watson picking up the wickets of Ahmed, Allan and Sattish then Barrett clean bowled Kazim so Bon Accord finished on 190 all out from 45 overs.

After tea was taken yet again provided by the Station Hotel, Ellon knew the task at hand.  Steve Anderson and Andy Churchill opened the batting for Ellon and Anderson took a likeing to the bowling of Awan hitting him to the boundary for fun.  At the other end Churchill was struggling with the bowling of Malik and it came as no surprise when he edged a great swinging delivery behind.

Jon Barrett joined Anderson and their team mates knew these pair would have to provide the backbone for the run chase.  Unfortunately this was not the case as Malik had other plans in mind and he had Barrett caught behind with only 56 on the board.

Chris Watson then Scott Middleton both joined Anderson and left him soon after, Stephen Reid decided to take it upon himself to get the Ellon innings back on track.  Anderson obviously appreciated the support he was given at the other end and both batsmen got stuck in.

Just when Ellon were looking on top with the score on 139, Anderson attempted to hit Ahmed into the gardens but never got hold of it giving Allan a catch at deep mid off.  Anderson again displayed his talent for all to see with an excellent 85.

Andy Parks joined Reid but the  unfortunate thing was that Reid had to leave early for work which resulted in him having to give his wicket away when he was batting so well.  The pair had got the score onto 160 so 30 runs were required from 7 overs to win.

Craig White came to the crease knowing the job at hand but unfortunately for the youngster he was bowled by Awan.  Similarly Parks was bowled by Awan when trying to get Ellon to the total.

Gordon McNeil and Tyson Dunz never gave up hope and Dunz was batting like a man posessed when trying to hit the ball everywhere.  The Ellon innings closed on 173 for 8 from 45 overs.

An excellent game was played largely in good spirit with either side not really deserving to win.

Ellon travel to Harlaw to play Artisans next Saturday.
