In their last warm up game before the start of the Aberdeenshire Grades Ellon Gordon “Penna” Cricket Club 1st XI visited Countesswells to play Gordonians.  Skipper Scott Middleton lost the toss and Gordonians put Ellon in to bat.  Andy Churchill got off to a fine start outscoring Jonathan Barrett and together the two put on 63 before Churchill was caught behind for 28.  Steve Anderson joined Barrett and they continued to score freely until McIntyre bowled Jonathan Barrett for 44.  Steve Anderson kept the scoreboard moving, helped by a few lusty blows by Scott Middleton. Unfortunately when Anderson was out for 31, with the score at 126, wickets began to tumble freely.  Charlie Reid and Chris Watson (with 19 each) were the main contributors towards the end and Ellon reached the score of 169 for 6 off the allotted 45 overs.

Some very tight and accurate bowling by Steve Anderson and Ross Wade caused the Godonian opening batsmen some difficulty and Steve Anderson had Hearns caught by Alistair Mustoe off the third ball of the innings.  The pace of Wade clean bowled Noden for only 2 runs in the sixth over.  After those early successes the score moved on to 125 before Ellon could take another wicket.  It has to be said that Ellon’s catching and fielding let them down again and, had the catches been held, the result could have been different.  A. Lowden was eventually stumped by Hayden Barrett off the bowling of Chris Watson for 27 and in the next over top scorer R. Shepherd fell to a catch by the keeper off Steve Anderson’s bowling having scored 80 runs.  R. Esson took up the challenge with a quick 27 leaving Ross Wade to take the only other wicket with another superb piece of bowling before Gordonians passed Ellon’s score in the 41st over.

Ellon need some fielding and catching practice before they travel to Queens Cross for the Grade 1 match on Saturday 26th.  The 2nd XI will entertain Mannofield at home with the between innings tea provided by the Station Hotel.

Penna Consulting Plc are sponsoring Ellon Gordon “Penna” cricket club this season and the players will be sporting new shirts and fleeces with the Penna and Club logo on.  We hope that the Ellon players will smarten up their fielding to match their attire.
